The concept of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) was initiated by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2000, following the recommendations of the National Action Plan for Assessment and Accreditation in Higher Education. The establishment of IQAC became an important quality sustenance measure for Higher Education Institutions across India. Later, with the implementation of the University Grants Commission guidelines and the objectives envisioned in the National Education Policy 2020, the role of IQAC gained greater significance in ensuring academic excellence, accountability, innovation, and holistic institutional development.
The primary intention behind the establishment of IQAC was to develop a conscious, consistent, and catalytic system for quality enhancement in higher education institutions. It aimed to internalize a culture of quality within the institution rather than treating assessment and accreditation as periodic external exercises. IQAC was envisioned as a mechanism to promote continuous improvement in academic and administrative performance, encourage stakeholder participation, and ensure transparency and accountability in institutional functioning.
The Role of IQAC is multifaceted and central to institutional quality assurance. It functions as a facilitative and participative body that works towards enhancing the quality of education, teaching-learning processes, research, governance, extension activities, and student support systems. IQAC plays a crucial role in implementing quality benchmarks, collecting and analysing feedback, organizing academic and administrative audits, promoting best practices, encouraging faculty development, and ensuring the effective implementation of NEP 2020 initiatives such as multidisciplinary learning, skill enhancement, digital education, research orientation, and outcome-based education. It also prepares and submits institutional reports such as the Annual Quality Assurance Report (AQAR) and coordinates NAAC-related activities.
The Usual Composition of IQAC reflects a participatory and representative structure. It is generally chaired by the Head of the Institution, with a senior faculty member serving as the IQAC Coordinator. The committee includes representatives from teaching faculty, administrative staff, management, students, alumni, employers or industry representatives, and external experts from academia or society. Such a diverse composition ensures collective participation in decision-making and quality enhancement processes.
The Functioning and Methodology of Quality Control in IQAC are based on continuous monitoring, evaluation, documentation, and feedback mechanisms. IQAC develops quality benchmarks and institutional parameters aligned with NAAC and UGC guidelines. It regularly conducts meetings, collects feedback from stakeholders, undertakes data analysis, and recommends corrective and progressive measures.
The cell promotes the documentation of academic and administrative activities, encourages innovation and best practices, and facilitates internal academic and administrative audits. Through systematic planning and review, IQAC ensures that quality sustenance becomes an integral part of institutional culture, thereby contributing to the overall growth and excellence of the institution.
