Roles and Functions of the Cell

The Research and Development (R&D) Cell at Loreto College promotes research culture among students and faculty by providing resources, guidance, and opportunities for academic innovation. The cell organizes workshops, seminars, and research projects that encourage critical thinking and problem-solving skills. It supports interdisciplinary research and fosters collaboration with external institutions.

About

The Research Cell at Loreto College was established to foster a robust research culture among faculty and students. Initially set up in 2013, the cell aimed to enhance research capabilities within the institution by providing support for various research activities. By promoting collaboration and interdisciplinary research, the cell has significantly contributed to the academic growth of the institution. Its ongoing efforts in enhancing research impact and professional development continue to uphold Loreto College’s commitment to academic excellence and societal contribution.

Research and Development Cell Sub-Committees

The RDC structure as follows:

  • Research Advisory Council (RAC): The apex body headed by the Principal.
    ●  Sr. Dr. A. Nirmala
  • Director (RDC): A distinguished researcher who coordinates all five committees.
    ●  Dr. Dinaz R. Jeejeebhoy
  • Committee Convenors: Faculty members who lead each of the five sub-committees mentioned above.

 

1.Finance and Infrastructure
This committee acts as the backbone for the physical and financial needs of the research community.

  • Budgeting: Managing and allocating funds for research projects and institutional seed money.
  • Infrastructure: Developing and maintaining high-end central instrumental facilities and research labs.
  • Resource Mobilization: Identifying external funding agencies and managing Corporate Social Responsibility funds for research.
  • Grant Management: Overseeing the financial reporting and auditing of sanctioned projects.

2.Research Program, Policy Development
This unit focuses on the strategic “blueprint” of the institution’s research activities.

  • Policy Formulation: Creating guidelines for research promotion, including incentives for faculty and students.
  • Thrust Areas: Identifying high-priority, multidisciplinary research areas relevant to societal needs.
  • Capacity Building: Organizing workshops on research methodology and academic writing.
  • Research Clusters: Forming “Frontline Teams” to encourage collaborative research within and across departments.

4. Product Development, Monitoring and Commercialization
This committee bridges the gap between a research paper and a market-ready product.

  • Incubation: Managing Incubation Centers and Start-up units within the campus.
  • Technology Transfer: Facilitating the licensing of technologies developed by researchers to industries.
  • Monitoring: Periodically reviewing the progress of ongoing research projects to ensure timely completion.
  • Business Facilities: Creating “Business-Centered Facilities” to support entrepreneurship among students and faculty.

5. IPR, Legal and Ethical Matters
This unit serves as the “supervisory body” to ensure the institution maintains high standards of integrity.

  • Intellectual Property Rights (IPR): Assisting researchers in filing patents, copyrights, and trademarks.
  • Ethics Committee: Ensuring all research follows ethical codes and mandatory plagiarism checks.
  • Legal Compliance: Handling legal agreements related to technology transfer and collaborations.
