Calcutta Times Campus Meet Report

Report on the Calcutta Times Campus Interview at Loreto College, Kolkata
Organized by the Department of Political Science
The Department of Political Science, Loreto College, Kolkata, organized a campus-based interview session in collaboration with Calcutta Times as part of a special Republic Day feature. The interview was conducted on the Loreto College campus and aimed to capture the voices and perspectives of young students on constitutional values, rights, freedoms, and contemporary democratic realities.
The interview was conducted by Ms. Sundas Jawed, an alumna of Loreto College, Kolkata, and a former student of the Department of Political Science. Representing Calcutta Times, she engaged students in a thoughtful discussion that connected constitutional principles with lived experiences in a rapidly evolving social and digital environment.
Students from Semester III who participated in the interview included Aankita Roy Chowdhury, Soumiki Ganguly, Uma Khanna, Mehuli Rudra, Oishee Dasgupta, Ruchika Majumdar, Urjaswi Dam, Yasra Ahmed, and Ayushi Oraon, along with Rajosi Ray and Hifza Shahnawaz from Semester I. The interaction provided a platform for students to articulate their understanding of freedom, equality, choice, and democracy as guaranteed by the Indian Constitution.
Framed around Articles 19 and 21 of the Constitution, the interview explored themes of freedom of speech, personal liberty, and equality in a world shaped by social media, moral policing, and constant public scrutiny. Students reflected on how freedom of expression often feels safest within the campus environment and among trusted peers, while digital platforms demand greater caution and self-regulation.
Several participants emphasized the distinction between equality and equity. Highlighting the gap between constitutional guarantees and social realities, students noted that equal rights on paper do not always translate into equal opportunities in practice. The discussion underscored the need for equitable systems that enable individuals from diverse backgrounds to meaningfully exercise their rights.
Overall, the Calcutta Times campus interview was a meaningful academic initiative that successfully bridged constitutional theory with student experiences. The interaction was published in the official Calcutta Times newspaper on 26 January 2026 and stood as a significant contribution to Republic Day discourse by foregrounding student voices and reaffirming the relevance of constitutional values in contemporary India.
