TRAINING ON CORS AND ITS APPLICATION AND GROUND TRUTHING OF MODERN MAPS USING NRTK ENABLED ROVERS

On 21st January, an experiential learning oriented academic session titled “CORS and Its Application and Ground Truthing of Modern Maps Using NRTK Enabled Rovers” was organised the Department of Geography, Loreto College, Kolkata in collaboration with the Survey of India. The session commenced at 9:00 a.m. and was conducted in three distinct segments, each focusing on different aspects of the topic.
In the first session, participants were introduced to the concept of CORS (Continuously Operating Reference Stations), its applications, advantages, and limitations. The historical background and development of modern surveying techniques were discussed in detail, illustrating the transition from the Great Trigonometrical Survey to the evolution of CORS technology. The speakers highlighted that there are presently 80 CORS stations in West Bengal, marking a significant expansion in technological infrastructure. Key technical terms and concepts such as GNSS, trilateration method, orthometric height, and ellipsoid height were also explained to familiarise students with the scientific underpinning of the system. The second session involved a practical component where participants registered on the CORS platform of the Survey of India. The registration process was conducted in a guided, step-by-step format to ensure that students understood the procedures for accessing and utilising CORS data. In the third and final session, participants received hands - on experience in the field. Demonstrations were conducted using instruments such as the Trimble Receiver R8s Rover and Field Data Collector, including their operation through associated applications. Students observed how latitude and longitude data can be measured and recorded on-site, thereby gaining exposure to real-time data collection and modern surveying practices. The programme concluded with a brief question and answer and feedback session, allowing participants to clarify doubts and share observations regarding the utility of the session.
The session proved to be highly informative and technically enriching, offering students valuable insights into contemporary geospatial technologies and their applications in mapping and surveying.
