TOPIC: Careers You Don’t Know Geography Could Lead To

On 20th January, an alumnae session was organised from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in Room No. 213. The invitee alumna Ms. Poushaly Talukdar, delivered a talk on “Careers You Don’t Know Geography Could Lead To.” The programme commenced with a brief introduction of Ms. Talukdar after which she was formally felicitated by Dr. Suman Chatterjee and Dr. Ambika Roy Bardhan. Following the felicitation, Ms. Talukdar began her address with a brief account of her journey and how she navigated her path in the field of Geography while exploring various career prospects. At the outset, she discussed the avenues available for pursuing higher studies, particularly in relation to individual interests and specialisations. She highlighted the importance of being aware of entrance examinations such as CUET and other institutional admission procedures. A major focus of her talk was on the relevance of statistics and the growing need for networking skills. She emphasised how statistics has become an essential component in contemporary Geographic research, and explained how strategic networking through email communication and academic connections can help students secure information, opportunities, and guidance for further studies. She also mentioned the significance of clearing the NET-JRF examination, noting that it provides students with an upper hand in academia and research-oriented careers. Additionally, she discussed several national and international institutions best suited for different academic niches and research areas within Geography. During the session, Ms. Talukdar also spoke about her academic journey at IIPS (Mumbai), outlining the subjects offered there and the research opportunities available at postgraduate and doctoral levels. She elaborated on the process of formulating unique research topics, methods of data collection, and the academic rigour involved in conducting research. To illustrate this, she discussed her own research topic on violence against women during pregnancy, and explained how she approached the subject, including the additional skills and considerations required for the study. The session concluded with an interactive question and answer segment, during which students clarified their doubts regarding higher education, research, and career prospects in Geography. The alumnae session proved to be informative and insightful, offering valuable guidance to students about the diverse directions Geography can lead them towards.
