On February 21, 2026, Loreto College Kolkata celebrated “Youth Voices on Multilingual Education” - an event hosted in observance of International Mother Language Day. Organised by the Central Library in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell, the Library Society, the Literary Society, and the Bangla Club, the programme aimed to promote awareness of linguistic diversity and to create a reflective space for dialogue on issues surrounding multilingual education. It was accompanied by a small book exhibition set up by the Jadavpur University Press and Virasat Art Publication.
The programme began with a welcome note in Bengali, setting an appropriate tone for the event. This was followed by a moving rendition of ‘Ekushey February’, performed by the Eastern Cultural Society. A short address in English then introduced the significance of Bhasha Dibosh, outlining its historical background and global relevance through a PowerPoint presentation. The session was further enriched by a vox pop video featuring reflections from eminent personalities such as Rammohan Mukhopadhyay, noted translator and author, and Abhishek Basu, Professor of Comparative Literature at Calcutta University, among others. The cultural segment included a medley performed by the Eastern Cultural Society, along with a recitation in Marwari that beautifully reflected the multilingual spirit of the event. Simultaneously, live painting sessions inspired by themes of language and identity were conducted, adding a visual dimension to the celebration. The event concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Ms. Madhumita Chanda, which included participants from diverse linguistic backgrounds, including Awadhi, Urdu, Bengali, Tamil, Hindi, and Nepali. The Bangla Club, with help from the Cine Society, live-streamed the entire programme, enabling wider participation and engagement.
