Interactive session with Dr. Brototi Roy, a noted Ecological Economist : A Report

On January 14, 2026, the Department of Economics of Loreto College, Kolkata in collaboration with Cultural Monks, organised an enriching session on Emerging Thoughts on Ecological Economics by, Dr. Brototi Roy. A Ph.D. from Central European University, Dr. Roy is known for her scholarship in Ecological Economics, an emerging field of academic research connecting Economics with Environment Science and Technology and is a member of Environmental Justice Project at Institute of Environmental Science and Technology, Autonomous University of Barcelona.
Commencing with a warm welcome note and tone setting introduction by Mr. Nilavo Roy , a faculty member of the department, the program rolled with Dr. Brototi Roy presenting her critical perspectives on how mainstream Economic rather limits the scope for integrating Economics with environmental issues from bio-physical point of view. Her valuable insights on several ideas like the difference between environmental and ecological economics; impact of privatisation and the different types of environmentalism marked the merit of the session in its true spirit
The entire lecture was followed by an extremely interactive and engaging discussion on the various current issues of sustainable development. This included conversations on the effects of privatisation and capitalisation on the environment, the different schools of political thought and their relationship with sustainability. The session concluded with a formal vote of thanks delivered by department faculty member, Mr. Nilavo Roy. The session fostered a deeper appreciation for the environment and the need to conserve it.

Learning Outcomes:
1. The students understood the fundamental concepts and emerging perspectives of Ecological Economics in addressing sustainability and environmental challenges.
2. The students could bolster critical thinking and reflective abilities through interactive engagement on contemporary environmental-economic issues.
3. The students developed interdisciplinary insights by integrating economic reasoning with ecological and policy-oriented perspectives.
